IES RP-42 – Recommended Practice: Dimming and Control Method Designations

There are multiple dimming methods by which aesthetic, energy saving, and/or code-required control of luminaires may be achieved as an alternative to on/off switching. Lighting control devices and systems provide a wide variety of options for users with an equally wide variety of interfaces. These can range from simple and familiar switches, sliders, and dials to sensors, touch screens, mobile devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Regardless of how the communication between the user and the lighting system begins, the final stage of controlling light is the actual control of or communication with the luminaire. This variety of possible dimming and control methods, even within a given luminaire family, poses challenges for anyone who writes or needs to respond to specifications: the designer as well as the manufacturer, distributor, and contractor implementing the system. This document provides standard short designations for easily and uniformly identifying open non-proprietary dimming and control methods and protocols for luminaires (including standalone lamps) and controllers. Designers and other specifiers should include this information in luminaire schedules, and manufacturers are encouraged to use these designations on luminaire, driver, controller, and lamp data sheets.
