ASTM E607 – Standard Test Method for Atomic Emission Spectrometric Analysis Aluminum Alloys by the Point to Plane Technique Nitrogen Atmosphere

1.1 This test method covers the spectrochemical analysis of aluminum and aluminum alloys for the following elements in the concentration ranges indicated:

ElementConcentration Range, %
Silicon0.001 to 23.0
Copper0.001 to 20.0
Magnesium0.001 to 11.0
Zinc0.001 to 10.0
Tin0.001 to 7.5
Nickel0.001 to 4.0
Iron0.001 to 3.0
Lithium0.0001 to 3.0
Cobalt0.001 to 2.0
Manganese0.001 to 2.0
Chromium0.001 to 1.0
Silver0.001 to 1.0
Zirconium0.001 to 1.0
Lead0.002 to 0.7
Bismuth0.001 to 0.7
Cadmium0.001 to 0.5
Titanium0.001 to 0.5
Beryllium0.0001 to 0.5
Vanadium0.001 to 0.15
Calcium0.001 to 0.05
Gallium0.001 to 0.05
Boron0.0001 to 0.05
Sodium0.0001 to 0.05

1.2 The test method is applicable primarily to the control analysis of chill-cast samples. Other forms may be analyzed, provided that (1) they are sufficiently massive to prevent undue heating; (2) they permit machining flat surfaces having a minimum dimension of approximately 30 by 30 mm (1.2 in. by 1.2 in.); and (3) reference materials of similar metallurgical condition and chemical composition are available.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
